Variation IX (Adagio) "Nimrod" of fourteen variations on a theme by English composer Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934).

KS1/2 idea: focus listening to contrast in the use of dynamics. The piece begins extremely quietly so pupils should listen carefully. As the volume grows, perhaps they could 'grow' so they reach their tallest at the loudest point (!), at KS2 also notice duration and tempo.

Official classification: The Romantic Period, Classical Pieces, Audio, Elgar, Sir Edward William, Victorian Times, Curriculum support
